Britney could be feminism's newest heroine

Sunday Apr 18 2010

Britney Spears blazing a trail for feminism? Who would have though it? And yet, last week, the pop princess, formerly known as popular culture's biggest casualty, forged a new identity for herself -- that of brave pioneer, helping to tear down the unrealistic goals of physical perfection modern women aspire to.

It seems unlikely that the girl who brought us Hit Me Baby One More Time, serving up seduction in a schoolgirl skirt, should have grown up into a lady who now seeks to debunk the myth and the marketing around current conceptions of beauty. And yet that is exactly what she's done. She's gone where no star of her level of celebrity has gone before.

She shot a recent ad campaign for Candie clothing, in which she appeared in a pink swimsuit and high-heeled shoes. But instead of simply signing off on the glossed-up, slimmed-down retouched version of the pictures, as would be standard practice, she's also released the same shots before any computer wizardry took place. Sans airbrushing, sans retouching. Just Britney, raw and unpolished.

Of course, it's not the first time we've seen her like this. Courtesy of the countless paparazzi documenters of her day-to-day life, the public have been treated to many shots of her looking less than perfectly glammed. We've been treated to close-ups of her acne, her bad hair days and her cellulite. Every imperfection has been carefully catalogued, circled in red, and commented on in magazines. This sort of bitchy exposure of the truth, however, is motivated only by jealousy and insecurity. It cheapens the self-image of the viewer as much as the image of the star.

By revelling in a celebrity's imperfection, all we do is compound a culture of criticism which we then turn upon ourselves. It's simple schadenfreude. And the grim pleasure we take in identifying famous flaws not only further elevates the red herring of perfection, but sets women against each other in pointless pursuit of it.

By Britney releasing these pictures, she not only sidesteps this grubby practice, she renders it redundant. By publishing the before and after pictures side-by-side, Britney exposes more vividly than we've ever seen before the exact mechanisms which are employed to create the chimera of body perfection. They myth falls down in front of our eyes. Those unflattering paparazzi shots of saggy bottoms and blotchy skin splashed over glossy pages like evidence of some kind of failure are, by this simple gesture, sort of neutralised. Indeed, if more female pop stars were as brave as Britney in revealing the way they really look, they might find themselves less dogged by the snappers who are paid fortunes to catch glimpses of A-list cold sores and rolls of fat.

"Britney's proud of her body, imperfections and all," an unnamed source said. And it's a pride she, of all people, has certainly earned. Just two years ago the world watched while the pop princess nose-dived into psychological meltdown. And how did the teen star, whose whole identity had been a marketing image, choose to register her frustration and rage? She let herself go. She put on weight. She shaved her head. Surely these were the ultimate acts of defiance from a girl who had been brainwashed into believing that the best measure of her personal value was grounded in how pretty she was, and how well groomed.

Britney's been to hell and back. She's risked losing her career, her looks, her children and her sanity. Now it seems, she's well on the way to regaining them all. She was raised to define herself by an empty media image. An image which she then deliberately tore down.

And, as these recent pictures prove, she's managed to establish a sense of herself based on something much more rooted than how glossy, shiny and perfect she looks on the pages of magazine.

It's only through developing proper confidence that she could afford to be so magnanimously open about how she really appears.

The generous gesture to other women in revealing herself, flaws and all, arguably marks the total rehabilitation of her self-esteem. If the marker of confidence is self-acceptance there could be no better demonstration of the latter than to broadcast one's imperfections to the world. And to do so in the interest of making the rest of womankind more self-accepting? Well this makes her nothing short of a contemporary feminist heroine. Sylvia Pankhurst she may not be, but there's a courage to this new Ms Spears that few other pop pin-ups could ever lay claim to.

Britney releases un-airbrushed images

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 9:23 PM on 14th April 2010

Britney Spears bravely agrees
to release un-airbrushed images of herself
next to the digitally-altered versions

Celebrities, and the industry around them, are often accused of producing images that affect young people's body image.

Which is why it's so refreshing to see one of the world's most famous pop stars allowing all of their imperfections to be highlighted.

Britney Spears has allowed the pre-airbrushed images from a shoot she took part in for fashion firm Candie's to be used ALONGSIDE the digitally-altered ones, so people can see the difference.

____________________________________

Brave move: Britney Spears has allowed airbrushed images from her shoot to be released along with the original raw photos which show all her imperfections

____________________________________

The 29-year-old singer made the extraordinary move in order to highlight the pressure exerted on women to look perfect.

In the first shot, she is seen facing the camera with her arms behind her back.

Imperfections that can be clearly seen in the un-airbrushed shot include blemishes on her calf, her larger thighs and, if you look really closely, you can see her feet have dry skin on them.

The airbrushed pictures, however, tell a different story with a slimmed-down waist and flawless, skinny legs.

Meanwhile, in the second picture, she is seen from the back - in the un-airbrushed shot she has areas of cellulite on the back of her thighs, a tattoo on her lower back (sometimes called a 'tramp stamp') is clearly visible and her backside is a little out of shape.

However, in the altered photo all of these imperfections have been wiped out - and she appears to have a pert rear, unrealistically smooth skin, slimmer legs and the tattoo has vanished.

Shaping up: The pop star's whole body has been trimmed down with the use of a computer, even down to removing a tattoo on her back

____________________________________

A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: 'Britney is proud of her body - imperfections and all.'

Of the experience, the singer told press: 'I had so much fun shooting the Candies for Kohl's campaign. My favorite set-up was against the gigantic wall of pink cotton candy.'

And she added: 'I got to wear the cutest clothes and they are perfect for summer!'

Bravo Britney! Both pictures posted side by side so we can see how unrealistic she is made to be in the photoshoped one...I personnally perfer the first picture, it is natural and beautiful even with the flaws. We are human and all have flaws . I think it is unrealistic pressure for these ad agentcies to depict how a womens body should look. I think more celebrities should show the young girls of the world what a real woman looks like!

Well all I can say is it's about time someone stopped setting the bar so high for women young and old to strive for a perfection that is unrealistic and unatainable. As a mother of three daughters I see the impact the media has and it's representation of the perfect woman. With the pressure that has been placed on Britney over the years I have to say she has come a long way and with this move I can say I am proud of her and the choice she made to allow the photo's out for all to see. I think she is beautiful as she is. No airbrushing just the real woman. Yes, way to go Britney, and may many more like her follow and free up the pressure on our young girls, and let them worry about what realy matters in life and be happy with who they are, as they are. Good for her! She's doing something positive here. Many women will look at this and think "Britney Spears has worse cellulite than I do!", and that's got to be a good thing. Be happy in the body you've been given. If you want to get rid of the cellulite, do what Britney has done; save the money on creams that don't work, and book yourself in for a professional photoshoot with digital retouching and enjoy your day! Life's too short to worry about such trivial things.

I really do hope that this starts a trend. And that eventually all mags/newspapers are one day forced by law to do the same thing whenever such seemingly flawless images are used to promote foods/films/drinks etc. Kids need to know about the tricks that cameras play!

Finally this woman has done something we can respect her for. Now Cheryl Cole - it's your turn to step up to the mark. I demand no more 'lashes styled using lash inserts' on ANY mascara adverts. My generation (I'm 21) and below are growing up with the lowest views of themselves. Good on you Britters!

Way to go Brit. To be honest she looks great in both photos, Yes she has a bit of cellulite, a few bruises (she has got 2 kids that no doubt throw tantrums) but she has always had a complex about her body and this shows that she is overcoming it. To me it shows that she is getting back to being the Britney we "The Fans" love and have truly missed. I couldn't have a photo taken that was photo-shopped and then put the original next to it, this lady has guts. Keep going with the confidenve Brit.

fair play to her. We look at magazines and ads and feel rubbish because we know we'll never look like that. Its good to see some real imferfections at last. More celebrities should do things like this! I think she looks great in the untouched photos for a woman who's had two kids.

Well Done Britney! It is so easy to forget that a little airbrushing in a magazine can really alter a person's body substantially. She looks amazing and REAL in the unaltered images and it's about time girls and women stopped trying to aspire to body images that are not even real! I wish more celebrities were as courageous and naturally beautiful as Britney to allow unaltered images into the press. We salute you Britney!

OMG! The 2 pics are SO different! I loved her Candie's ad and thought they helped her a bit, but didn't think that much. Not saying her real bod looks bad but compared to the airbrushed one, it does. This kind of thing really DOES mess up WOMEN (it's not just young girls). They need to stop airbrushing celebs so much. It's not her real body, so why sell it to the public as if it is? It's just not right to completely distort it and let people go on thinking that celeb looks like that. Now when I see celebs looking perfect I will highly doubt it's them. Kudos to Brit for wanting to show the real one though. It makes me like her even more. She seems to be very mature now. I am far from being ugly, but almost every woman, beautiful or not, deals with not feeling they look good. Good on Britney.

Good for Britney, other celebs should join in. Airbrushing messes with peoples minds especially those who are younger and impressionable. It sends the wrong message out that looking false ,plasticated ,unaturally enchanced ,emaciated is something to strive towards.

Thank you Britney for doing this. There is no such thing as a perfect body. Maybe if the entertainment world would be honest of what people really look like, people would not have so many eating disorders, poor self-esteem, always wanting to change what we have or what we think we dont have. Keep up the good works for all the people that follow you and your life endeavors. Teach your children to love themselfs just as they are.

I have a new found respect for Britney Spears. I think air-brushed humans look terrible in photos, unreal and abnormal. Wow, nice to see someone own up to their imperfections, or perfections. She looks normal. I think it's unrealistic what they do to sell magazines, and then create body issues for women all over the world who think that they need to look like these 'fixed' images. It is what it is. I think with all the airbrushing that goes into celebrity photos, we could all be 'stars' and be on the cover of magazines, looking realistically "Imperfect".

This is brilliant, I don't care about whether she's got make up on because I can do that, but I can't walk around with a computer graphics specialist altering my image down the street can I? Well done to her, PR move maybe but so? Must take a lot to do this and it needs to be happening more. No matter how much I tell myself "These women are airbrushed" I still find myself thinking "How can I ever look like that?" Excellent move Britney!

Britney Haters Rule the Blogs

Haters and Fans Collide
on Perez Hilton.com and x17 Online

What is the semi-universal fascination
with hating Britney Spears?

Britney Spears has become widely known for her seemingly random acts of self destruction. Her current status as a monumental staple of tabloid fodder has resulted in the creation of worldwide cynics and critics (also known as “Britney haters”) that can predominantly be found in the comment sections of Perez Hilton.com and x17 online. What is it about Britney Spears that has got so many bloggers' knickers in a knot?

Hate Unites Multiple Generations

On websites such as x17 online, the age, gender and relationship status of Britney “haters” seems to span a surprisingly large gap. From the “tweenies” (who are the kids on the brink of adolescence and can usually be associated with an adamant use of the word “hater”) to the working mothers of teenage girls; everybody seems to have an opinion about the way Britney should live her own life.

Are people entitled to their personal opinions about the actions of Britney Spears? Some people may not think so. But what about the hypothetical case of a single mother with a teenage daughter who idolizes Britney Spears and everything she does? In this type of situation, Britney’s thoughtless actions might have a negative impact on the life of another person. But is that really Britney’s problem?

Is It Playful Banter or Just Plain Cruel?

Some “Britney haters” claim in their posts that they are blogging just to kill time at work. Others blog so frequently that they must be sitting at their computers 24/7 clicking the refresh button in their internet browser waiting for the latest news on Ms. Spears in order to be the first to post a hate-filled comment.

Then there are the other types of “haters” that can usually be found on x17 online. These types of people will post several hateful messages under anonymous names with such passion and conviction believing that other people actually care about their opinions. They are countered by people that call themselves Britney’s fans who basically just say things like, “Shut up haters!” 600 comments later, the perpetual fight between the fans and the “haters” is still in round 1 leaving both sides inwardly knowing that they have nothing to show for their day apart from hours of pointless squabbling.

“Can’t We All Just Hate Britney?”

The odd thing is that both the fans and the “haters” don’t even seem to be talking to each other. On x17 in particular, the “haters” seem to post a hateful comment, then log off the website supposedly feeling like they accomplished something worthwhile. When one side does decide to respond to the other, their sole purpose is to insult the other’s personal opinions for not matching their own. About 20 comments later, disturbingly; somebody will interrupt and tell them that they have strayed from the subject of hating Britney.

Will It Ever Stop?

Do “Britney haters” just need somebody to look down on in order to feel better about their own lives or are they voicing their opinions in an attempt to protect themselves and those that are vulnerable to the actions of Britney Spears? Either way, their comments (whether cruel or caring) seem to be falling on deaf ears. The only way they may be able to get their point (whatever that may be) across to Ms. Spears, is if they stop criticizing her personal choices. If every moment of Britney’s life isn’t documented and scrutinized, she may have a chance at becoming a normal person. If Britney becomes normal, the “haters” will be forced to focus their hate on the real issue; themselves.

Femme Fatale Wins 'Album Of The Year'

Femme Fatale is Album Of The Year so far
after fans voted in a recent MTV.com poll!

When we say things were close, we mean it:
As of yesterday afternoon, when we last checked in on the polls, Lady Gaga’s Born This Way was leading with a slim 2 percent lead over Brit Brit. But Miss Spears’ fans came to their diva’s rescue and she persevered in the home stretch, pulling ahead of Lady G by a full 5 percent.

Gaga and Britney left everyone else in the dust. The two accounted for over 85 percent of the total vote, leaving Beyonce’s latest, 4 (which, in fairness, we should note was only released this week), to grab just under 10 percent of the remaining votes. Adele, Bad Meets Evil and Chris Brown split what was left pretty evenly, with each album pulling in less than 2 percent of the vote.

Out of the 31,000+ votes, here are the results:

Britney Spears, Femme Fatale – 14,094 votes – 45.17%
Lady Gaga, Born This Way – 12,514 – 40.11%
Beyonce, 4 – 3,095 – 9.92%
Adele, 21 – 557 – 1.79%
Bad Meets Evil, Hell: The Sequel – 557 – 1.79%
Chris Brown, F.A.M.E. – 384 – 1.23%

Thoughts:

Given the conversation that erupted on Twitter and Facebook when we announced the poll, we’re certainly not surprised by the strong showings for either Spears or Gaga. Those girls have some devoted fans and you did them proud!

And because they’re so new to the marketplace, it’s not exactly surprising that the albums from Beyonce and Bad Meets Evil didn’t pull down huge numbers.

But we do find it surprising that Adele’s critically acclaimed 21 received such a weak reception. Not only is it the year’s biggest selling album so far, with just under 2.5 million albums sold, compared with BTW’s 1.5 million and Femme Fatale’s 579,184, but it also houses the year’s biggest runaway hit, “Rolling In The Deep.”

Britney: The Origin Of The Super-Pop Species

With her new album sitting at #1, Bigger Than the Sound looks at Britney's unprecedented career.

Apr 6 2011 6:52 AM EDT
By James Montgomery

By the time you read this, Britney Spears will have scored her sixth #1 debut with Femme Fatale, her latest installment of supersonic, stealth-fighter pop, a collection of songs equipped with laser-guided, heat-seeking hit missiles. In fact, Femme Fatale is more like an F-22 Raptor than an album.

Maybe I shouldn't be amazed that Brit finds herself atop the charts once again, but don't we live in austere times? Aren't Odd Future the only thing that matters these days?

I'm only sort of kidding. Because, frankly, each and every time Britney lands another #1, it's kind of like we've traveled through a wormhole and ended up in 1999, a time when the industry was still flush with cash and Lou Pearlman still lumbered the land. This was only 12 years ago, but it may as well have been 12 million.

These days, we still have plenty of pure pop stars, though none of them are quite like Britney. Lady Gaga is into performance art. Katy Perry is the California Gurl. Pink is the punky older cousin with a ton of tattoos. As is often the case with evolution, they have each developed specialized traits in order to survive. Britney is, in a lot of ways, the origin of the species (for simplicity's sake, I'm just ignoring Madonna, who basically did everything before any of this generation's stars were even teething). She was — and, I suppose, still is — the music industry's first attempt to promote a star that is everything to everyone. And each and every time she surfaces with a new album in tow, it signals the return of pop's Mesozoic era. For all intents and purposes, she may spend her time between albums trapped in amber, waiting to have her DNA extracted by some scientist.

This is by no means meant to come across as a slight against Spears. I fully understand why her fans love her the way they do, not to mention the fact that Femme Fatale is a heck of a pop record, a starry shadowbox of the coolest sounds you're likely to hear all year. It's more me simply marveling at the way she operates — in the cockpit of a high-powered fighter, making glossy, big-budget videos, putting on full-scale pop spectacles. There truly, honestly isn't anyone else like her.

We should take this opportunity to appreciate what Britney Spears — and her album — represent. She is the last super-pop star left standing. There was a time when everyone did things this way; now it's her and her alone. Spears is still everything to everyone, in a time when all we hear about are "niche markets" and "splintered genres," and for that alone, the success of Femme Fatale is noteworthy. Can she continue to survive among her more specialized peers? She's certainly earned the right to, though one gets the feeling she's probably not too worried about that fact. The thing about being the first is that there isn't really anything — or anyone — to compete against. So let others sweat the small stuff; Britney's only concerned with being Britney. Now and forever.

Britney Is Most Searched Person Of The Decade

Since 2000 the singer has received more online hits than world leaders and royalty, according to Ask Jeeves. Spears, who shot to fame with her 1999 debut album Baby One More Time, topped the poll above celebrities such as Madonna and Brad Pitt.

Ask Jeeves spokeswoman Nadia Kelly said: "Britney Spears began the decade as a fresh-faced new superstar on the block and has remained as high profile ever since." The 28-year-old, who has sold more than 85 million records worldwide, has in recent years been surrounded by controversy. She recently hit the headlines by divorcing her ex-husband Kevin Federline, fighting for custody of her two children and being admitted to a psychiatric ward.

Osama bin Laden takes second place on the list after a flurry of hits following 9/11, followed by David Beckham. Princess Diana is fourth, followed by Tony Blair, Madonna, Simon Cowell, Jade Goody, Madeleine McCann and Brad Pitt.

One Of The Best Popstars Of Our Time

Britney Spears: So Many Accomplishments,
One Of The Best Popstars Of Our Time

This article was orginally posted on May 11, 2005

Who knew when Britney Spears came out with her debut album “…Baby One More Time” that she would become one of the best popstar’s on the planet with so many accomplishments, blowing other popstars out of the water? Well, Britney has.

Her debut “…Baby One More Time” debuted at number 1 on Canadian and U.S. charts. In The U.S., it stayed there for six weeks. The single with the same name went number 1 world-wide, including the U.S. and U.K. Spears broke the record for the youngest artist, at age 17, to have his or her first single reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with “…Baby One More Time”. Spears also broke the record for the youngest artist, at age 17, to have his or her first single and first album simultaneously reach #1 on the Billboard charts. Her album later gave hits like “Sometimes” (top 30), “(You Drive Me) Crazy” ,and “From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart” (top 20). ” Born To Make You Happy”, was released outside the US and went to #1 in the UK. The album …Baby One More Time is to date the best-selling album by a teenager, with over 14 million copies sold in the US and over 22 million worldwide. It is the 24th best selling album in the U.K. ever!

Her follow-up album, Oops!… I Did It Again, released on May 16, 2000, also debuted at #1 in the US and Canada, and was a similarly huge hit. It sold over 1.3 million units its first week in the US, making it the fastest-selling album by a female artist. The album has sold over 10 million copies in the US alone and over 18 million worldwide. Singles off the album include “Oops…I “id It Again”, which was a top 10 hit in the US and a #1 in several countries around the world, the top 30 “Lucky” and the top 20 “Stronger”. Another single, “Don’t Let Me Be The Last To Know” was also released, but failed to achieve much success.

Following the success of her first two albums, Spears’ career skyrocketed, and a multimillion-dollar spokesperson ads came up. Her most popular ads were for Pepsi, for which she earned a reported $7-$8 million. During this time, Spears also branched out as an author by co-writing a novel with her mother Lynne called Britney Spears’ Heart to Heart. She also released the follow-up novel; this one was called “A Mother’s Gift”.

Her next album, Britney, was released in November 2001, and again debuted at #1 on both the US and Canadian charts, selling over 740,000 units its first week in the US. This made her the only female artist in SoundScan history to have her first three albums debut at #1. The top 30 hit “I’m A Slave 4 U”, was produced by The Neptunes. Other singles included “I’m Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman”, “Overprotected”, “Boys”, and “I Love Rock ‘N Roll”. Though these tracks did well internationally, they all failed to make much of a stir on US radio (due to a problem with ClearChannel). Over 4.5 million copies of Britney have been sold in the US alone, and the album went on to sell over 11 million copies worldwide. She then starred in Crossroad, which went to number 2 at the box office and making over $100 million.

Her fourth album, In the Zone, was released in November, 2003. The album took in lesser-known producers such as RedZone, as well as such big names as Moby and R. Kelly. Spears co-wrote eight of the album’s thirteen songs. Zone rose straight to the top of the US album charts in its debut week, making Spears the only female in music history to have her first four albums debut at #1. The album’s first single, “Me Against the Music” only went top 40 in the US, though it was a #1 hit in many other countries around the world. “Toxic”, became a worldwide and #1 hit in over twenty different countries, and went to number 9 in the U.S. “Everytime” was only a top 20 hit in the US, it was a #1 hit overseas in such countries as the UK and Australia. In The Zone, however, has sold over 3 million copies in the US and close to 8 million copies worldwide. The day before the release of In The Zone, Spears received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Her tour, The Onyx Hotel Tour, grossed over $34 million dollars and was seen by over 600,000 fans in North America and Europe. It ended up being one of the best selling tours of the year. If not cancelled, it would have easily been very close to being the top selling tour of 2004. This is not including her other huge money-making amazing tours. In September 2004, Forbes estimated Spears’ net worth at $125 million USD.

She released her first hits collection, Greatest Hits: My Prerogative, on November 9, 2004. The album debuted at #4 in the US charts, selling over 255,000 copies in its first week of release. As of Spring 2005, the set has sold over 1 million copies in the US and over 5 million copies worldwide. Spears also notched up the biggest-selling first week for a greatest hits compilation by a female artist in UK chart history (115,341 copies), smashing the first-week sales of previous high-profile collections from Whitney Houston, Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Céline Dion, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson and Shania Twain. This is also not bad in the U.S. A recent Greatest Hits album by Mandy Moore failed to make top 20.

She then released her first fragrance, “Curious”, in September. “Curious” is currently ranked the #1 fragrance in department stores. The fragrance had the biggest debut in sales in history from Elizabeth Arden. Spears is expected to earn a reported $12 million from the fragrance. In addition, the scent ended up as the #1 fragrance of 2004 in department stores, and in 2005, “Curious” was honored by the Fragrance Foundation, naming it Best Women’s Fragrance.

Her 50+ awards she has one including the best, A Grammy, for “Toxic” as Best Dance Recording. She was also nominated for 6 other Grammy’s.

Her Video’s and DVD’s together sold over 14X platinium. 4 of the 6 went to #1 in the U.S.

She is the best-selling female artist of the still-running decade and century and has sold a RIAA-certified 32 million albums in the US and 75 millions worldwide.

No matter what Britney does next with her career, she can never be called a flop. She is one of the best selling popstars ever, and better than all of the compitition!
